Teen convert to stay in foster care

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- A judge has ruled an Ohio teenager who says her Muslim father wanted to kill her for becoming a Christian should remain in foster care for now.

At a hearing Tuesday in family court, Fathima Rifqa Bary and her parents agreed to try counseling, The Columbus Dispatch reported. The judge said Rifqa, 17, should remain in the custody of Franklin County Children's Services until she and her parents reconcile or her 18th birthday.

Rifqa ran away from her parents' Columbus apartment in July. She traveled to Florida where she lived with Blake and Beverly Lorenz, both Christian pastors she had met on Facebook.

After hearings in Florida, she was ordered returned to Ohio.

Rifqa acknowledged during the hearing she had been unruly prior to running away.

Mohamed and Aysha Bary have said they accept their daughter's religious conversion. Investigations in Florida and Ohio found no evidence she would be unsafe living with her parents.
