Boy, 5, survives fall down elevator shaft

ATLANTA, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Authorities in DeKalb County, Ga., said a 5-year-old Atlanta boy is hurt but alive after falling as much as 15 feet down an elevator shaft Monday.

DeKalb County Fire Capt. Eric Jackson said the boy, whose identity was not released, was hospitalized with unspecified injuries after falling down the elevator shaft at a Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority station, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Jackson said the boy's injuries were not serious, adding the child was alert while being rescued from the shaft.

The fire official said the boy had been leaning against the elevator's doors on the station's second floor "when the door somehow became disengaged or opened and that's when the child fell" onto the top of the elevator car.

Rescuers used a rescue basket to remove the injured boy from the elevator shaft and he was transported to a hospital for evaluation.

The Journal-Constitution said the incident is being investigated by MARTA officials.
