Man charged with threatening Obamas

NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- A New Orleans man has been charged with calling 911 and saying he planned to kill Barack and Michelle Obama, federal authorities said.

John Turnpaugh, 47, was charged Thursday by a federal grand jury for allegedly placing an anonymous call Dec. 30 to a city 911 operator and threatening to kill the president and his wife, U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said.

Turnpaugh, who was arrested Dec. 31, also was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and illegal possession of several firearms, The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported Saturday.

The charges, in all, carry a maximum sentence of life in prison and $1 million in fines, Letten said in a release Friday.

The case was being investigated by New Orleans police, the U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
