NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Two former Blackwater contractors will not be freed on bond while awaiting trial on charges they killed two Afghan civilians, judges in Texas and Virginia say.
The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot said Thursday a magistrate judge in Norfolk, Va., denied bond for former Blackwater contractor Christopher Drotleff this week, while Drotleff's security contractor coworker Justin H. Cannon was denied bond in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Both Drotleff and Cannon are facing murder charges and other related counts for allegedly killing two Afghan civilians in Kabul last May.
Drotloff insists he and his fellow former contractor for a subsidiary of the private military company Blackwater Worldwide, now known as Xe, Services LLC, were simply acting in self defense.
Drotleff appealed Tuesday's bond decision and is set to appear before U.S. District Judge Robert G. Doumar next Tuesday, The Virginian-Pilot said.
Cannon is expected to be transferred from Texas to Virginia to face trial in the case.
