Jewelry may help identify skulls

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Investigators believe three rings and a necklace found with the bones of a man and woman in a national forest near Los Angeles belonged to one of the dead.

Detective John Duncan of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said he hopes someone will come forward to identify the owner, the Los Angeles Times reported. The remains, found at Christmas, remain unidentified.

"The three rings seem to go together, and we believe a family member may recognize it," he said.

While the medical examiner could not determine how the pair died, Duncan said one skull showed signs of trauma, possibly from a bullet hole.

The investigation began Dec. 24 when hikers found a skull in an area in the Angeles National Forest burned out by last year's Station Fire. A forensic team accompanied by a cadaver-sniffing dog found the second skull two days later, and the search turned up other bone fragments and the jewelry.

Detectives believe the bodies were dumped in the area before the Station Fire, which began Aug. 26 and continued to burn until Oct. 19.
