11-year-old behind wheel in fatal crash

PORTERVILLE, Calif., Jan. 13 (UPI) -- California police Wednesday were trying to figure out why an 11-year-old boy was driving a car that crashed, killing his mother, his sister and himself.

Police said the family's car went through a stop sign about 7:25 p.m. Tuesday between Porterville and Tipton and was broadsided by another vehicle.

Killed were Jose Silva, Maria Silva, 30, and Elizabeth Silva Covarrubias, 6, all of Woodville, The Fresno Bee reported. A 34-year-old man who lived with the family, Froylon Gonzalez, was hospitalized with what were described as life-threatening injuries.

The other driver, Charles Seguin, 44, of Porterville, suffered only minor injuries.

Felipe Zamora Gonzalez, the victim's brother, said the family was returning home from the boy's soccer team practice in Tulare when the crash occurred.

California Highway Patrol officer Stefanie Buck said investigators had not yet interviewed Froylon Gonzalez.

"Until we're able to talk to him, we can't speculate," she said.

Drugs or alcohol did not appear to be a factor, she said.
