AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- The Texas State Board of Education is expected to review a proposal from two advisers who say Christianity's role in history should be a social studies focus.
The Austin American-Statesman said Sunday the education proposal from Christian conservatives David Barton and the Rev. Peter Marshall is expected to be part of this week's state board talks about possible social studies curriculum revisions.
Barton and Marshall want Texas public schools to focus more on points of history related to Christianity. Among their suggestions are teaching how the Bible influenced certain historical documents or how Christian pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact of 1620.
The duo's proposal has been opposed by some in the history and religious communities such as John Fea, a history professor at Pennsylvania's Messiah College.
"I'm an evangelical Christian, and I think David Barton and Peter Marshall are completely out to lunch," offered Fea, whose school is a Christian institution.
"They are preachers who use the past and history as a means of promoting a political agenda in the present," he added.
The American-Statesman said a final decision on the proposal is expected in March.
