Jury selection delayed in Tiller trial

WICHITA, Kan., Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Jury selection in the trial of a man accused of slaying Kansas abortion doctor George Tiller, originally set to begin Monday, has been delayed, a judge says.

Sedgwick County, Kan., District Judge Judge Warren Wilbert said in a statement released Monday in Wichita that jury selection in the murder trial of anti-abortion activist Scott Roeder has been pushed back to Wednesday, The Wichita Eagle reported.

"Due to additional legal issues that have surfaced over the weekend, jury selection in the above entitled case has been delayed," Wilbert's statement said.

Dozens of potential jurors are set to be interviewed for the trial, in which Roeder, 51, is facing first-degree murder charges in the May 31 slaying of Tiller, who was gunned down shot in the lobby of a Wichita church he attended.

Roeder told The Kansas City Star in November he shot Tiller because he had to act to protect unborn children.

"There is a distinction between killing and murdering," he told the Star. "I don't like the accusation of murder whatsoever, because when you protect innocent life, that's not murder."
