WASHINGTON, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Her campaign camp says former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina raised nearly $1.1 million for her U.S. Senate bid.

The San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News said Monday in addition to the funds raised from campaign donors, Fiorina obtained a $2.5 million loan to use in her electoral attempt to obtain the Senate seat held by U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.

The electoral attempt is the first for Fiorina, a Republican, and the multimillionaire's campaign camp confirmed she already spent $830,000 on the campaign during the final months of 2009.

"Frank and I have invested in this campaign because we've been blessed and believe that 2010 will mark the resurgence of" Republican values, Fiorina said in a news release, referring to her husband, former AT&T executive Frank Fiorina.

The Mercury News said as of the end of September 2009, Boxer had $6.3 million in cash available to her.
