OPELOUSAS, La., Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Fire officials in Opelousas, La., said a woman and her two children died after a fire at a local residence.

The Opelousas Fire Department said while firefighters were able to take Brittney Sion, 23, from Saturday's fire along with her son, Trimirron Stelly, 3, and her daughter Analya Sion, 2, all three later died, The Advocate (Baton Rouge, La.) reported.

The three victims, who were pronounced dead at an area hospital, died as a result of smoke and burn injuries.

Fire and police officials in Opelousas are investigating the blaze with the help of state Fire Marshal's Office investigators. It is suspected the deadly fire may have been accidental in nature, The Advocate said.

Fire Marshal Browning said the home where the fire occurred did not have any smoke detectors inside.

"If your home does not have a working smoke detector, your family has less than a 40 percent chance of waking up in a fire," Browning said.
