Students in trouble over 9/11 sweatshirts

DEARBORN, Mich., Jan. 6 (UPI) -- A group of Arab-American students at a Michigan high school are in trouble for wearing sweatshirts with an image of the World Trade Center towers.

The 15 students were sent to the principal's office when they showed up Monday at Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn wearing the hoodies, WDIV-TV, Detroit, said. On the back, the shirts had the number 11 looking like the twin towers, a thunderbird, the Edsel Ford mascot, and the slogan "You Can't Bring Us Down."

"What took place here today was an inappropriate, distasteful act," school district spokesman David Mustonen, said.

The students, who paid $25 each for the sweatshirts, told the principal they did not intend any disrespect. But other students said they were horrified.

"If I was in charge, I would have them expelled," Lindsey Winstrand said. "But I think suspension is the least they can do."

The sweatshirts were confiscated, and the school is weighing other penalties.
