MIAMI, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Nicaraguan Web sites have posted recent photos of Cuban leader Fidel Castro in a "companion wheelchair" while holding meetings in Havana.

The Sandinista Party-affiliated Web sites, including La Voz del Sandinismo, Tuesday showed 12 photographs showing Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and his wife Rosario Murillo posing with the Cuban leader, some showing Castro standing next to Ortega and others seated in the wheeled chair in front of a hospital-style table.

El Nuevo Herald reported if the photos are authentic they would represent the first time Castro has been shown in a wheelchair since he underwent emergency surgery in 2006.

The Cuban media reported on the Ortega-Castro meetings last year and text accompanying the photos indicated they were taken taken during two Ortega visits to Cuba in April and December.

The U.S. newspaper said the photos depict Castro's wife, Dalia Soto del Valle, Fidel's brother Raul and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez.
