Poll: Most optimistic about U.S. future

PRINCETON, N.J., Jan. 4 (UPI) -- A majority of Americans are optimistic about the future of the United States, results from a Gallup Poll released Monday indicate.

Sixty-three percent of people surveyed said they were "very optimistic" or "optimistic" about the United States during the next 20 years, results showed.

While Americans expressed greater optimism about the country's future at the beginning of the 1990s and the 2000s, the current level exceeds expressed greater optimism about the country's future near the beginning of the 1990s and 2000s, the current level exceeds that of the 1980s, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said.

Optimism about the future of the United States seemed linked to political preferences, Gallup said. With Democrats controlling the White House and Congress, 77 percent of declared Democrats said they were optimistic about the United States over the next 20 years. About 50 percent of Republicans said they were optimistic. Independents were about midway between the two groups.

Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews with 1,025 adults conducted Dec. 11-13. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
