Cockfight raid in Texas nabs 169 suspects

POOLVILLE, Texas, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Authorities in Parker County, Texas, said 169 people were arrested and 114 roosters were seized during a raid of an area cockfight.

Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said Saturday afternoon's raid near Poolville, Texas, occurred after authorities kept the cockfighting site under surveillance for two weeks, the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reported.

Fowler said as part of the raid, as many as 15 children between the ages of 7 and 15 were placed into the custody of Child Protective Services.

The county sheriff said charges will vary among those arrested at the cockfight in the area barn.

"The people who were arrested will go before a judge and be charged with a gambling offense," Fowler said. "We will look into charging some who were arrested with federal charges. A charge of engaging in organized crime is a possibility for some."

The Star-Telegram said authorities found a number of dead and injured roosters at the cockfighting site, along with an unspecified amount of drugs and money.
