Sled dogs rescued after losing musher

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Nine sled dogs missing in Alaska for two days after losing their musher while on a training run have been rescued, but a 10th dog died, an official says.

Willow Dog Mushers Association President Erin McLarnon said the dogs were found entangled in sled lines nearly 10 miles away from where their musher, Jan Stevens, was knocked from her sled, the Anchorage Daily News reported Thursday.

One dog apparently was strangled while attempting to free itself. McLarnon said the surviving dogs had various injuries.

"Almost everybody had some type of bite wound on them, and a couple of them had already formed some abscesses, but nothing that's life-threatening," McLarnon said.

Stevens told the Daily News she was knocked off her sled Monday when she hit a tree while training for a possible run in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
