KANEOHE, Hawaii, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama and his family spent part of the morning of New Year's Eve taking in a private viewing of the movie "Avatar," the White House said.
The Secret Service cleared one of the 10 theaters at Windward Mall in Kaneohe, Hawaii, about 9:20 a.m. for the president, the first lady and their daughters, Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8, the Honolulu Advertiser reported.
The White House had not said how the Obamas plan to spend the last evening of the decade.
Obama, with his daughters, drew applause from a crowd in the mall's parking lot as they left the movie. The president, wearing dark shades, waved.
Politico said that marked the most reporters had seen of the president since the first family arrived in Hawaii for vacation on Christmas Eve.
