Man delivered live grenade to police

SAN ANTONIO, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- A man brought three grenades, one live, to a San Antonio police station and asked officers to dispose of them, authorities say.

Police Sgt. Michael Oliva said Michael Navarro, 49, told officers Wednesday he had the grenades in a box in his vehicle outside the station, the San Antonio Express-News reported Thursday.

"We looked at him like, 'What?'" Oliva said. "Bringing grenades to the (station) is pretty unusual."

Police said Navarro found the military ordnance in his late grandfather's house nearly 10 years ago.

The grenades, two of which were determined to be training grenades, were taken from Navarro's vehicle by bomb squad members without incident.

While Navarro told police he suspected the grenades were not dangerous, Oliva told the Express-News the civilian should have contacted authorities without transporting them.
