Burglar robs house as family sleeps

DALLAS, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- A Dallas-area couple was robbed by a burglar who tiptoed from room to room as they and six of their grandchildren slept.

David and Renee Karp woke Tuesday to find a kitchen window open and their flat-screen television, desktop and laptop computers and the grandchildren's iPods missing, The Dallas Morning News reported. Karp's wallet had been moved from the spot where he left it on his dresser and $160 removed.

"It's really frightening to think you're sleeping over there, and somebody puts his hand in the room," Karp said. "I think God was looking after me, to tell you the truth."

Karp, a music professor at Southern Methodist University, said the worst loss was the desktop computer, which held years of digital photographs and a musical score he had been working on. The robbery occurred the night after the family attended his mother's funeral.

Police Lt. Robert Sanders said the thief was probably a professional "cat burglar." He said those burglars are often highly skilled and often like to work unarmed.
