Wahid's contribution to democracy lauded

WASHINGTON, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- The U.S. White House, in a condolence message on the death of former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid, lauded his contribution to democracy.

"A pivotal figure in Indonesia's transition to democracy, President Wahid will be remembered for his commitment to democratic principles, inclusive politics, and religious tolerance," the message said.

"He worked for peace and prosperity for all Indonesians, and he sought to be a bridge between people of different faiths. We extend our deepest condolences to former President Wahid's family and to the people of Indonesia."

Wahid, the fourth president of Indonesia, who held office from 1999 to 2001, died Wednesday at age 69.
