DETROIT, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A Detroit mother and her boyfriend beat her 2-month-old infant to death and buried the body behind their apartment building, authorities say.

Wayne County, Mich., Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Charlotte Wyatt, 21, and her boyfriend, Leon Cole, 26, Monday with the murder of Asia Wyatt, The Detroit News reported.

Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens told the newspaper Wyatt and Cole tried to cover up the slaying by burying the baby's body under wood chips behind their building, adding that Wyatt waited until the day after the alleged assault to report the death.

"While I understand that parenting classes cannot be mandatory before parenting children, too many cases (of child abuse) are occurring," Worthy said in a statement obtained by the News.

She said Wyatt has been charged with felony murder, first-degree child abuse and tampering with evidence, while Cole faces charges including involuntary manslaughter, fourth-degree child abuse and tampering with evidence.
