"This is insane. We have some pretty good size piles," Richelle Hollinrake told The Des Moines Register in a story published Saturday.

Christmas travelers were stranded throughout the upper Plains Friday as the storm closed airports and roadways throughout the region, leaving many without power overnight.

Saturday, the storm doused mid-Atlantic states with freezing rain, which changed to rain in many areas, making for a slick mess on roadways, Accuweather.com reported.

New England saw a mix of sleet and freezing rain, with coastal New England threatened with localized flooding from above-freezing temperatures and snow melt.
