PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- A Philadelphia teenager was suspended from his suburban high school for wearing a Santa Claus suit in class, school officials said.
School administrators at Strath Haven High sent 18-year-old Michael Hance home for a day. They cited rules about unacceptable modes of dress that distract and disrupt the teaching-learning process, WPVI-TV, Philadelphia, reported Wednesday.
Hance wasn't given the opportunity to change into street clothes, just sent home, WPVI-TV said.
He said Student Council members had been allowed to wear costumes.
"There were elves and reindeer and they didn't get suspended," Hance said.
"I don't know what the harm was," said Hance's mother Barbara. "It's a Santa Claus costume. That's all it was."
Hance said he has retired the Santa suit and is having second thoughts about Easter plans. His mother agrees.
"If Santa doesn't work I don't think the Easter bunny will either," she said.
