Dating service too much for radio station

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Dec. 23 (UPI) -- An online dating service was dropped by a rock station in Rhode Island after listeners complained it offers to find lovers for married people, a publicist says.

While no officials at WHJY in Providence confirmed the rock radio station parted ways with AshleyMadison.com, a publicist for the dating service cited an e-mail from station employee Rick Andrade detailing the station's concerns, The Providence Journal reported Wednesday.

"Sorry," the unidentified publicist quotes Andrade of saying in the e-mail to AshleyMadison.com, "but the station has gotten a ton of calls from people upset with us advertising the site. My GM (general manager) made the decision to pull the ads off."

AshleyMadison.com offers to find married individuals additional romantic partners. The company, which claims to have nearly 5 million members, tabs itself "the world's most discreet dating service."

AshleyMadison founder Noel Biderman said he was surprised by the station's decision, saying his company's advertisements had prompted a strong response in the state.

"Our marketing department told me we had thousands of members from Rhode Island, not an unusual response," he told the Journal.
