Held report on imam's death irks Muslims

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- The Muslim community in Dearborn, Mich., has voiced concerns about a county medical examiner's refusal to release an autopsy report on the death of an imam.

Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah died Oct. 28 in a gunfight with the FBI, who alleged he was a leader of a Muslim separatist group involved in moving stolen goods, The Detroit News reported Tuesday.

The Muslim community said it was worried the refusal to release the autopsy report could signal a possible cover-up of facts surrounding his death, a community leader said Monday.

Dawud Walid, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations of Michigan, said requests from his organization for a copy of the report have been ignored. He said the medical examiner's office also quoted high fees for copies of the autopsy photos.

Dennis Niemiec, a Wayne County spokesman, said the report was completed but being held back at the request of Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad until his department finishes its investigation, the News reported.
