DENVER, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Students at Colorado's three largest universities can use storage lockers provided by the schools to store their weapons, campus officials say.
At Colorado State University, the last school system to allow concealed weapons on its campuses, the amount of student-owned weaponry would rival that of many police departments, The Denver Post reported Monday.
"We have quite a variety on hand," Wendy Rich-Goldschmidt, chief of police at the Colorado State University campus in Fort Collins, said.
Student's rifles, shotguns, handguns and knives are routinely stored at CSU, the University of Northern Colorado and the University of Colorado at Boulder, the Post said.
The weapons are kept in lockers inside campus police departments and monitored 24 hours a day.
Students with proper ID who have undergone a background check can take their weapons out any time.
Most are used for hunting on weekends or holidays, officials say.
Students at CSU must agree to one other requirement.
"We ask that they put their weapons in a gun carrier when they bring it over to us," Rich-Goldschmidt said. "We want to keep things low-key, and having someone seen with a weapon on campus could start a panic."
