Man's blood donations reach 80 gallons

CINCINNATI, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A blood center in Cincinnati said a 79-year-old man has donated 80 gallons of blood during his lifetime, helping as many as 1,920 individuals in need of blood.

Dr. Ronald Sacher of Cincinnati's Hoxworth Blood Center said Paul Michels of Villa Hills, Ky., reached the impressive donation milestone 58 years after beginning blood donations in 1951, WXIX-TV, Cincinnati, reported Wednesday.

"Mr. Michels is a Hoxworth hero and a hero to many tri-state patients," Sacher said. "We encourage the community to applaud Mr. Michels efforts and join him in becoming a Hoxworth hero by making a blood donation."

Michels told WXIX his lifetime of blood donations was based on an urge to help others.

"I wanted to help others in the community," Michels said. "I feel blessed and fortunate to have the good health to continue to help others."
