SAN JUAN, Texas, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- A woman and her boyfriend were arrested in San Juan, Texas, after an aborted fetus was found in a gift box under her Christmas tree, police said.
Ruby Lee Medina, 31, and Javier Gonzalez, 37, were arraigned Monday on charges of abuse of a corpse and evidence tampering, San Juan Police Chief Juan Gonzalez said.
Medina allegedly took medication to abort the 7-month-old fetus, Chief Gonzalez told The San Antonio (Texas) Express-News in a story published Tuesday. Police found the fetus Thursday after receiving an anonymous tip.
"Apparently they cleaned up the fetus and they placed it inside a gift box under the Christmas tree," Chief Gonzalez said. "We still don't know why they didn't follow the proper burial process."
Authorities were awaiting autopsy results before presenting the case to a grand jury, The McAllen (Texas) Monitor reported Tuesday.
"The autopsy report will indicate what type of investigation we have and where we take it from there and if there's any additional charges to file," the chief said.
