SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Social networking Web sites such as Facebook are being targeted by malicious programs that hijack users' accounts to mail promotions, U.S. victims said.
Matt Marquess, who works at a San Francisco public relations firm, said one of the computer programs infiltrated his Twitter account and began sending his friends messages about a $500 Victoria's Secret gift card, The New York Times said Monday.
"No one had said anything to me," Marquess said. "I thought, how long have I been Twittering about underwear?"
Rocky Barbanica, a producer for an online storage firm based in Texas, confirmed his Twitter account was also commandeered by a malicious program, which sent out a message that also infected his friends' accounts.
"I took it personally, which I shouldn't have, but that's the natural feeling. It's insulting," Barbanica said.
Security experts told the Times networking offerings like Twitter and Facebook are ideal targets for such invasive programs because individuals trust messages from their online friends, allowing the program and the promotions it contains to spread.
