ATLANTA, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A federal judge in Atlanta sentenced a former Georgia man to 17 years in prison Monday on terrorism-related charges.
Ehsanul Islam Sadequee, 23, was convicted this summer of offering material support to a Pakistani militant group engaged in what U.S. authorities called "violent jihad."
Sadequee in 2001 made e-mail contact with the Taliban offering to fight on their side against the initial U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, which began after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, CNN reported.
The former Rosewell resident acted as his own lawyer in the trial and Monday's sentencing.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said U.S. District Judge Bill Duffey scolded Sadequee for his "distorted world view," but gave him a lighter sentence than the 20 years requested by the prosecution.
"If there is any contradiction to God's will, I would say you are it," said Duffey, who was to sentence Sadequee's co-defendant, Syed Haris Ahmed, in a separate hearing later Monday.
