SHELTON, Conn., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Police said 46 people suffered minor injuries when icy roads caused a pileup of an estimated 58 cars on a state highway in Connecticut.

Police said while six people were hospitalized in the wake of Sunday's major pileup on Route 110 near Shelton, Conn., none of those individuals were thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident, WFSB-TV of Hartford, Conn., reported Monday.

The crash temporarily closed the road following the chain-reaction crash and a temporary shelter was opened to offer treatment to those involved it the mass accident.

Police told WFSB that roads turned icy prior to the accident due to freezing rain in the area.
