Teen accused of planning school attack

BRIDGEWATER, N.J., Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A 16-year-old boy in Bridgewater, N.J., was arrested for allegedly plotting an attack on his school like Colorado's1999 Columbine massacre, authorities say.

Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest said the teen, whose identity was not released, was taken into custody Friday after a Bridgewater-Raritan High School police resource officer learned of the alleged plot from another student, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported.

Forrest said in a statement the arrested teen allegedly told the other student of his plan "to commit a Columbine at the high school on December 14."

The Columbine High School massacre in Jefferson County, Colo., involved two teenage students killing 13 people during an attack in April 1999.

Forrest said based on the student's account of the threat, authorities used a search warrant to search the teen's home Friday.

Authorities allegedly found bomb-making instructions and explosives in the home, along with ammunition.

The Star-Ledger said the discovery prompted the teen to be charged with attempted murder, possession of explosives, possession of a destructive device and attempted widespread damage or injury.
