HAMMONTON, N.J., Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A group of drug dealers with ties to Mexico and Ohio brought methamphetamine and marijuana to South Jersey, investigators said Friday.

Sixteen of the 28 people whose arrests were announced live in Hammonton, a major blueberry-growing center on the edge of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Thousands of migrant farm workers come to the area in the summer to pick blueberries and harvest other crops.

The investigation began when postal inspectors discovered a 60-pound package of marijuana mailed in McAllen, Texas, to an address in Lindenwold, N.J., federal agents said. Marijuana destined for New Jersey was allegedly smuggled across the border and mailed from McAllen in the Rio Grande Valley.

Methamphetamine was allegedly smuggled to New Jersey by car from Ohio.

Twenty of the group have been charged in New Jersey and the rest in federal court.
