SAN DIEGO, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- An unfinished tunnel between Tijuana and San Diego, apparently built by drug traffickers, had amenities like an electric system and elevator, investigators say.

The tunnel, 900 feet long and 100 feet below the surface at its deepest point, would have had a U.S. exit at Otay Mesa in San Diego, CNN reported.

Mexican law enforcement agents and the San Diego Tunnel Task Force, which includes agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Border Patrol and the Drug Enforcement Administration, found the tunnel last week, officials said. Thirteen people were arrested in the tunnel.

In Tijuana, access to the tunnel was through a warehouse. A bathroom had a false floor that served as a lift down to a hidden room.

Investigators say construction apparently began three years ago. They believe the last portion at the Otay Mesa end was close to completion.
