ALBANY, N.Y., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Disgraced former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer is considering another run for statewide office, this time for comptroller, the New York Post reported Thursday.

The newspaper cited sources who said Spitzer has been discussing a possible run with potential donors and Democratic leaders.

"He wants to run if he can," one source said. "He's still talking about it."

Spitzer made his name as a crusading New York attorney general. After he became governor, he was caught in a federal investigation that revealed his taste for expensive call girls, although he was never charged criminally.

The scandal has even inspired a television series, CBS's "The Good Wife."

The current state comptroller, Tom DiNapoli, is a former assemblyman who was appointed to the position in 2007 when Alan Hevesi admitted using state employees for personal errands.

One insider told the Post that Spitzer will have a hard time getting past the scandal if he decides to run. But he said the New York Democratic Party is in chaos, given that four of six holders of statewide office were not elected to their posts, including Gov. David Paterson, Lt. Gov. Richard Ravitch and U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand as well as DiNapoli.
