Fire in Chicago high-rise kills woman

CHICAGO, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A Chicago fire official said Thursday that an elderly woman was the lone victim of a five-alarm fire overnight in a high-rise condominium building.

Fire Department Commissioner John W. Brooks said the body 84-year-old Beata Bild, a German immigrant, was found near the door to her 36th floor condo unit, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Authorities suspect the deadly blaze began in the woman's unit in The Plaza on DeWitt in the city's upscale Streeterville neighborhood.

The fire left 12 people injured, including five firefighters. One of the victims, a 55-year-old man, was in critical condition from smoke inhalation.

The blaze, which drove some condominium residents to the building's roof in search of safety, was brought under control thanks to the efforts of nearly 300 firefighters.

The Chicago Tribune said the woman killed in the fire called authorities at 1 a.m. Thursday morning to report smoke in her condominium unit.

Ten residents of the 44-story building were displaced by fire, smoke or water damage.
