AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- The rise of China is the top news story of the decade, a study performed by a U.S. language analysis group indicated.
The Global Language Monitor, based in Austin, Texas, said in a release Wednesday that its proprietary algorithm tracking words and phrases used in the media and on the Internet determined China's ascension to political and economic power to be top news story of the last 10 years.
The analysts said it was followed by the Iraq War, the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the "war on terror" and the death of U.S. pop star Michael Jackson.
Also in the Top Ten were the 2008 election of U.S. President Barack Obama, the global recession of 2008/2009, Hurricane Katrina, the war in Afghanistan and the onset of the financial crisis. The remaining top spots went to the Beijing Olympics, the South Asian tsunami, the war against the Taliban, the death of Pope John Paul II and Osama bin Laden eluding capture.
"The rise of China to new economic heights has changed -- and continues to challenge -- the current international order," Paul Payack, president of the Global Language Monitor, said in a release.
