Mumbai terror suspect pleads not guilty

CHICAGO, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Terror suspect David Headley pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Chicago to charges he played a strong role in the 2008 Mumbai massacre that killed 175 people.

One of Headley's court appointed attorneys, John Theis, said the federal charges could result in the death penalty. A second court-appointed attorney has been added to Headley's defense team, WLS-TV, Chicago, reported.

Headley was born in the United States but raised in Pakistan. He allegedly changed his name from Daood Gilani on the orders of a Pakistani terror cell. He is accused of helping in the planning of the attacks in Mumbai by Pakistani radicals in November 2008.

Headley was arrested in October and charged in an alleged plot against a Danish newspaper that published a cartoon offensive to Muslims.
