PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- A Lebanese man who allegedly told U.S. agents he is a member of Hezbollah has been ordered held without bail by a federal judge in Philadelphia.
Dani Nemar Tarraf, 38, was arrested in Philadelphia after a two-year undercover investigation, the Philadelphia Daily News reported. Tarraf, who has been living in Trnava, Slovakia, allegedly negotiated to buy 10,000 machine guns as well as shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles to be shipped to Syria or Iran.
In court papers, investigators said Tarraf had already handed over $20,000 for a down payment and came to Philadelphia to inspect the weapons he wanted to buy.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Miller said Monday Tarraf is a flight risk and was buying weapons intended for "stone-cold killers." Tarraf allegedly told agents he belonged to Hezbollah, the Lebanese organization which has been listed as a terrorist group by the United States since 1997, and has received military training from the group.
