CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- U.S. military officials say they have successfully deployed a next generation battlefield communications satellite.
Maj. Mark Hadley, mission manager of the Air Force's third Wideband Global SATCOM communications spacecraft, known as WGS-3, said Saturday's launch of the satellite from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station was a success, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported.
The newspaper said windy, wet weather and technical troubles with some ground equipment had scrubbed previous launch attempts.
Air Force officials said the launch will provide a major upgrade for the decades-old Defense Satellite Communication System, which has served as the military communications backbone for more than 20 years.
"It really is a game-changer (for U.S. war fighters)," Hadley told the Sentinel.
