WASHINGTON, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., says he's "proud" of his former U.S. vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin.
Asked Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" if he thought the former Alaska governor's brand of conservatism is what the Republican Party needs to gain political ground in the 2010 midterm elections, McCain said, "I think that Sarah Palin is a -- has earned herself a very big place in the Republican political scene. I'm proud of her."
McCain used the TV opportunity to deride Palin's critics.
"I am entertained every time I see these people attack her and attack her and attack her," he said. "She's irrelevant, but they continue to attack her. I am so proud of her and the work that she is doing."
McCain also offered that he "enjoyed her book," "Going Rogue," in which Palin criticized key McCain campaign staffers Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace.
