AL-FASHIR, Sudan, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Two members of the joint African Union-United Nations mission in Darfur were killed when attacked by gunmen in North Darfur, the United Nations said.

The United Nations said in a release the two Rwandan peacekeepers, whose identities were not released, were killed Friday by a group of unidentified gunmen as the U.N. troops were collecting water in the Sudanese region.

Since the start of 2008, 17 of the mission's armed personnel have been killed in hostile confrontations in Darfur.

Darfur is mired in an ongoing battle between government forces and various armed groups. The conflict has already claimed at least 300,000 lives and displaced 2.7 million people.
