NEW YORK, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Retired TV news anchor Tom Brokaw said he and his wife escaped injury Friday when they were involved in a fatal three-vehicle crash in New York.

Brokaw, 69, said in a statement that the accident occurred about 1 p.m. on the Bruckner Expressway in New York City, ABC News reported.

The identity of the 28-year-old woman who died when she was thrown from a sport utility vehicle was not known.

"The Brokaws were in the far left lane when they noticed a spool of cable bouncing along the far right lane," the former NBC News anchor said in his statement. "Just then, a green SUV in the right lane came up fast and tried to avoid the cable. The driver lost control of her vehicle and slid into the middle lane, forcing a mail truck into the Brokaw lane of traffic."

The New York Post reported Brokaw braked and his car skidded along the median while the SUV and truck both overturned.

Police said the crash shut down the stretch of highway for hours, the Post said.
