PROVIDENCE, R.I., Dec. 3 (UPI) -- A National Grid spokesman said nearly 6,500 customers were without power early Thursday due to heavy winds throughout Rhode Island.

National Grid spokesman David Graves said 5,064 customers in Providence County lost power during the ongoing storms, while 2,290 Washington County customers and 1,999 Kent County customers were forced to do without power, the Providence (R.I.) Journal reported.

"Everything is storm-related. Wires down, tree limbs down," Graves said.

While the heavy rain and winds that battered parts of Rhode Island are slowly dissipating, AccuWeather.com said Thursday that parts of the Southern United States will soon face a snowstorm due to a developing storm system.

AccuWeather.com said parts of Texas should face unseasonably cold temperatures and snow due to the system, before the snowstorm moves on to Louisiana, central Mississippi, and northern Alabama.

Cold temperatures are already in place in Denver as the National Weather Service forecast for Thursday morning reached a low of 5 degrees, The Denver Post said.

Mike Baker of the National Weather Service said if a storm front moving across Wyoming does enter Colorado, the state could enjoy a brief respite from frigid temperatures.

"If the clouds come down during the night, they'll serve as a blanket and the air temperature won't go quite so low," Baker said.
