Four Gitmo detainees sent to Europe

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Four detainees from the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, military prison were transferred to three European countries, officials said.

Saber Lahmar, part of the 2008 Supreme Court decision in which Guantanamo Bay detainees won the right to challenge their detentions in federal court, was to land Tuesday in France, The Washington Post reported.

"We are grateful for the courage and generosity of the French people and government, and for the ongoing effort by President Obama and Ambassador (Daniel) Fried (the administration's special envoy on detainee issues), which will now give Mr. Lahmar a chance to rebuild his life in France," Robert Kirsch, a lawyer who represented Lahmar in federal court, told the Post.

Also on Monday, the administration transferred two Tunisians to Italy, where they were expected to face prosecution on terrorism charges, an Obama administration official told the Post. A Palestinian detainee was transferred to Hungary, the official said.

The military detention facility now houses 211 detainees, the Post said. About 90 have been cleared for repatriation or resettlement in a third country.
