ALBANY, N.Y., Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Facebook and MySpace have closed the accounts of more than 3,500 convicted sex offenders living in New York state, authorities said.
The accounts were the first closed under the state's 2008 Electronic Security and Targeting of Online Predators Act, known as e-STOP, The New York Daily News reported Tuesday.
"Before e-STOP sexual predators freely lurked in social networking sites trolling for innocent victims," said Laura Ahearn, executive director of Parents for Megan's Law and the Crime Victims Center.
The accounts, closed in recent weeks, including those of a man convicted of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy, another convicted of raping a 2-year-old girl and a third convicted of sexual misconduct against a 10-year-old girl, authorities said.
Convicted sex offenders have 10 days to notify the state after creating new online profiles. If they fail to notify the state, they face felony prosecution.
