CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- A former Ohio doctor was in federal custody Wednesday, two days after police say they found an arsenal of pipe bombs, guns and ammunition in his apartment.
Mark A. Campano, 56, of Cuyahoga Falls was taken into custody after being released from an Akron hospital where he was treated for hand and arm injuries allegedly suffered when a bomb detonated Monday night, WKYC-TV, Cleveland, reported. The former anesthesiologist is charged with violating federal firearms and explosives laws, the report said.
It had not been determined why Campano had allegedly accumulated the arsenal, authorities said.
The Akron Beacon Journal reported authorities, who at first suspected they had come across a methamphetamine-making operation, discovered at least 35 pipe bombs and 18 guns.
"It wasn't a clandestine meth lab," narcotics Detective Sgt. Perry Tabak said. ''It was a clandestine bomb lab.
"There was tons of ammunition -- hundreds of rounds of ammunition."
Campano was stripped of his medical license by the State Medical Board of Ohio in 2006 because of a drug problem, the TV station said.
"In my career here our Department has investigated or responded to calls where pipe bombs have been made, but nothing to this large quantity or magnitude before," Cuyahoga Falls Police Chief John Conley told WKYC.
