SHIPPINGPORT, Pa., Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Nuclear reactor coolant leaked into a pressurized relief tank at a Pennsylvania power plant early Tuesday in an "unusual event," officials said.

The one-hour incident at the Beaver Valley 2 Power Station, operated by FirstEnergy Corp. near Shippingport, Pa., earned the lowest of the four Nuclear Regulatory Commission emergency classifications, utility officials said.

"The pressurizer relief tank remained intact," a statement from the NRC said. "All other systems functioned as designed and the plant is stable. Containment was closed at time of the event. No radioactive release occurred."

The statement indicated the NRC's senior resident inspector had gone to the site to monitor owner FirstEnergy's handling of the event.
