WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Special envoy Richard Holbrooke says the United States plans to work closely with Afghan President Hamid Karzai's new government.
The special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan told reporters at a special briefing in Washington the recent elections in Afghanistan, however imperfect they might have been, "produced a winner and a legitimate government with which we intend to work as closely as possible," a U.S. State Department news release said.
Holbrooke spoke to reporters to brief them on U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's recent trip to Afghanistan to attend the inauguration of President Hamid Karzai for a second term.
"As the secretary said, we are encouraged by what we saw during this trip," Holbrooke said. "Secretary Clinton described the moment that we saw a few days ago as a window of opportunity."
