HILLSBORO, Ore., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- A driver in Oregon who allegedly fatally shot a randomly targeted passenger in another car was killed by police after a high-speed chase, officials said.
The shooting occurred Saturday in Hillsboro, about 15 miles west of Portland, police said, The (Portland) Oregonian reported.
The driver of a green Honda Civic fired into a car heading in the opposite direction, police alleged.
Danny Le Gore, 55, of Hillsboro was transported by helicopter to a hospital, where he died. Police identified the man who allegedly shot him as Shawn Schumacher, 28, of Hillsboro.
Police said they have been unable to find any link between Le Gore and Schumacher.
The suspect took off, heading west toward Cornelius, about 5 miles away, and fired at police cars chasing him, police said.
After crashing his car, he attempted to get away on foot but was shot dead by police.
Robert Layton, a Cornelius resident who saw police shoot the suspect, said the man was wearing camouflage pants and no shoes.
Cornelius Mayor William Bash said this kind of violence is unusual for the town. "This is the first time we've had a police shooting in Cornelius in a long time, if ever," he said.
