BRECKENRIDGE, Colo., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- A 14-year-old girl died when she hit a tree while skiing fast on an intermediate slope at a Colorado resort, officials said.

Haley Rose Gans of Colorado Springs died Friday at the Breckenridge Ski Resort, the Aspen Times reported. Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson said she was "skiing very fast and into a tree."

She was killed by the impact when her chest hit the tree, Richardson said. Her head was protected by a helmet.

The teen was believed to be the first person killed on a Colorado ski slope during the new season.
